I don’t trivialise government business- Uyo Council Boss presents scorecard

The Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, has said his administration has lived up to expectations, noting he does not trivialise government business as the Council helmsman.
Hon. Udo stated this on Tuesday in his office in Uyo, during a Chat with the Conference of Online Publishers in Akwa Ibom State (COOPA).
Udo said he has, since assumption of office, worked to justify the mandate entrusted to him by the people, pointing out that his administration has recorded life-changing achievements in various sectors, including infrastructural development.
“We have graded rural roads around Ikono Ibom and Etoi Clans. We have fixed power in some communities. For instance, if you go to Winners Chapel at Ikot Ebido, we upgraded the transformer at that axis from 300KVA to 500KVA and it is working for that community.”
“When we got into Council, our first duty was to restore public power supply to the Council. We fixed the power substation in the Council and also acquired a 100KVA generator”, he said.
In health, the Chairman disclosed that his administration has constructed a Primary Health Centre and also hosted a free medical outreach in the area.
He listed other achievements to include the payment of students bursary, as well as construction and revamping of administrative buildings within the Council Secretariat.
“We have done a lot in the Education Sector. Recently, we paid bursary to 392 students across 13 institutions. We needed to show that we recognise the students’ community. We have reactivated the Students’ Worldwide body in Uyo and paid Union dues to allow the students go home with their bursary in block. We also give regular assistance to our students.”
“I run a collaborative administration. That is why I haven’t had issues with my Councillors and Supervisors. We get them involved and cross-fertilize ideas. It is not just during budget proposals. Regularly, I sit with my Councillors and its exciting. It is not a one-man show, so you allow the Councillors have a feel of government too.”
“The local government level is where you learn leadership. I have my integrity that I came with into government. I don’t want to hear that I deprived anyone of anything. That is why I make sure that things are sorted out well.”
“I don’t neglect the Civil Service structure. We also invest in staff welfare. We have deep relationship with our stakeholders and accord them all the recognition they deserve. So there is a balanced equation.”
The Council Boss also gave an insight into his style of leadership and relationships with Supervisors, Councillors, civilian servants and stakeholders.
“Today, we have a Primary Health Centre at Uruan Street set up by the Council and is up and running. We realise there was need to take pressure from the health facility at Barracks Road. These are things you can verify.”
“We have done medical outreach in collaboration with Vision Africa and the focus was on eye challenges. Medicated glasses and drugs were given free and beneficiaries didn’t pay a dime.”

LAS VEGAS — Las Vegas police have arrested a man in the deadly 1996 drive-by shooting of Tupac Shakur, a long-awaited break in a case that has frustrated investigators and fascinated the public ever since the hip-hop icon was gunned down on the Las Vegas Strip 27 years ago.
Duane “Keffe D” Davis was arrested early Friday morning, although the exact charge or charges were not immediately clear, according to two officials with first-hand knowledge of the arrest. They were not authorized to speak publicly ahead of an expected indictment later Friday.
Davis has long been known to investigators and has himself admitted in interviews and in his 2019 tell-all memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” that he was in the Cadillac where the gunfire erupted during the September 1996 drive-by shooting. Shakur was 25 when he was gunned down.

THE Executive Secretary, National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), Dr Iyela Ajayi, has called on Akwa Ibom State to change the nomenclature of State Secondary Education Board (SSEB) to State Senior Secondary Education Board (SSSEB).
This is contained in a statement made available to newsmen by the commission’s Head of Public Relations and Protocol, Fatima Bappare, in Abuja on Friday.
Bappare said Ajayi made the demand while speaking with the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Dr Akon Eyakenyi, during a courtesy call.
He explained that Section 21, sub-section 2 of the NSSEC Act 2003, provided for states to comply by establishing SSEBs.
He said the Act also directed states to contribute at least five per cent as the counterpart funding to qualify for the NSSEC intervention fund.
Ajayi further stressed the need for state SSEBs to be represented on the national body with the composition and functions as provided in the Act.
This, he said, would assist in fast tracking legislative processes as well as drafting and passage of the Executive Bill by the State Houses of Assembly, uniformity of all SSSEB Laws, and elimination of any contradicting provision that would exclude states from benefiting from the NSSEC fund.
“Establishment of the state Senior Secondary Education Boards will also give room for smooth implementation of NSSEC functions and mandate in all states,” he said.
Ajayi also appealed to the Akwa Ibom State government to provide a furnished office for use as the commission’s provisional office, as well as land in Uyo for the commission to erect its South-South zonal office.
Responding, the Deputy Governor, Eyakenyi, expressed the state government’s willingness to collaborate with the commission.
She further disclosed that land had already been earmarked for the SSSEB in Uyo, while assuring the commission that Akwa Ibom State was adequately prepared to draft and pass the Executive Bill while the State House of Assembly was also ready for its speedy passage.

He said Balogun Olamilekan Eletu aka Sam Larry is now in their custody and he is currently assisting with the ongoing investigation.
