Preparatory to Governor Udom Emmanuel’s visit to Ukanafun local government area for campaign rally, the senior special assistant to the governor on Grassroots Mobilization, Mr. Ndiana-Abasi Nana Udom took to social media to announce that students in the area are now back to school following the end of insurgency that had rocked some parts of the local government for a long time. He wrote; “It feels good to see students on uniform walk the streets of Ukanafun again. May God bless His Excellency, Governor Udom Emmanuel.”
First of, as a border local government, the crisis was not only a torn on the flesh of the indigenes and residents of the area, it was also a major setback to the state. Particularly, Ukanafun is one of the gateways to the commercial city of Aba, Abia state so insurgency had a negative effect on economic growth of the state. Secondly, the spill over into other local governments of Etim Ekpo, Ika and even Ikot Ekpene, was leading to a complete confinement. The daily killings and destruction of properties had almost rendered the area unhabitable.
Even in parts of the area that were crisis-free, people could not still walk in broad daylight without looking over their shoulders. Within a twinkle of an eye, what started as mere local fraternity had snowballed into a full-fledged insurgency. But in furtherance of his avowed commitment to peace in the state, Governor Udom Emmanuel has ensured that peace has been restored to the area. For me, the most significant campaign rally of the governor is the one in Ukanafun. To see that people in the could finally walk the streets, return to their businesses and even turn out in thousands for a public event is a testimony that indeed, the siege is over.
As a sign of what is to come, the governor performed the official commissioning of UFAINI IBOM PROCESSING LIMITED, Ikot Akpan Nkuk and a Palm Kernel Oil Plant at Ufani Ibom Processing Limited both in Ukanafun during his visit to the area yesterday. This is good governance at work. Udom Emmanuel has fought and brought peace to Ukanafun, it is now left for the people to guard this peace jealously. They now owe themselves and the state, a debt of gratitude to overwhelmingly support the governor today, tomorrow, on March 2, 2019 and till 2023.
