EMMANUEL UKPONG-UDO: THE NEW FACE OF EFFECTIVE REPRESENTATION

By David Akpan

When a certain health and safety consultant came on the political scene with a glowing track record of people-oriented service, giving his constituents assurances that, given their mandate, he would perform creditably and put smiles on their faces, Ikono/Ini people filed out in their numbers and placed their destiny and hopes in the hands of one man: Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo.

Macaire, as he is fondly called, not oblivious of the weight of expectations on his shoulders has hit the ground running from the off.
Notable among his early landmarks in office was the establishment of the “I earn, You earn” scheme that witnessed the appointment of a concourse of 50 aides, an unprecedented feat in the history of Ikono/Ini federal constituency, now emulated by many across the length and breadth of the Nation. This was a well calculated attempt at having “eyes and ears” in the grassroot and ensuring participatory leadership where his constituents benefit directly from his resources.

On the heels of that came the time to tangibly prove his commitment to the welfare of his people. The member of the Green Chamber responded to the distress situation of one of his constituents whose business premises was gutted by fire and property destroyed. Moved with compassion, he swung into action by promising to send help. In a matter of days, he fulfilled his promise and her means of livelihood was back on its feet.

To further buttress his avowed commitment to the emancipation of his people, Obong Emmanuel Ukpong-udo few weeks ago directed that stakeholders from the 21 wards in the federal constituency forward to his office a list of intervention projects that should be sited in their various domains which would reflect the collective need/yearning of the locality. This is sensitive leadership and representation, hand in gloves with the people.

As the ninth assembly continues to gain momentum in the discharge of its oversight functions, Hon (Obong) Emmanuel Ukpong-udo has been appointed into two Ad-hoc House Committees: the first, to investigate employment in federal ministries, parastatals and other government agencies; the second, to investigate the non-remittance of contributions into the Nigerian Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) by the Federal, State and Local Government, Parastatals, Agencies, corporations and companies from 2010 till date.

To crown these, he was appointed Deputy Chairman of the House Standing Committee on interior; a committee which will, along with the Ministry of Interior, oversee internal security and recruitment of officers and men of the Prisons Service, Immigration Service, Fire Service and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

His inclusion in these committees is a confirmation of the capacity of the member and the confidence vested in him by the lower chamber of the National Assembly.

Hon. (Obong) Emmanuel Ukpong-udo represents the deepest yearnings and expectations of a people and he has gone about fulfilling them with zest, passion and utmost commitment.
This truly is a position concurrent with the main thrust of his plan to give to his constituency and Akwa Ibom people in general what truly belongs to them.
