With less than a year to the next general election, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political, Legislative Affairs and Water Resources,Rt Hon. Barrister Ekong Sampson, has reiterated that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is unstoppable in Akwa IbomDo State.Barrister Sampson made this known in Uyo on Friday when the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Sir Monday Uko; that of Transport and Petroleum Resources, Mr. Orman Esin; Chairmen of the 31 Local Government Councils, and other relevant stakeholders called on him to discuss a wide range of issues including the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise.Addressing newsmen shortly after the meeting, the Special Adviser said “we looked at a range of issues that will enhance our service delivery, particularly on politics. We shared in the strong current of opinion that Governor Udom Emmanuel has done very well and deserves reelection.”“The Chairman of ALGON came with his team and we spoke extensively on a range of issues in the state and the need that Akwa Ibom State must maximize our advantage; must mobilize our people maximally to come out and enroll in the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise. We also discussed the need for collaboration and synergy to get the best result. We are going to continue the conversation and to work together. We intend to build upon this exercise to the success of the state government,” he added.”We will ensure no energy is spared through our collaborative efforts to reelect Governor Udom Emmanuel so as to enable him consolidate on his clearly outlined vision for Akwa Ibom State.”…he said.“Akwa Ibom is fully a PDP State and we are prepared for election. Those who think PDP will fracture will be disappointed because we are going to hold the ground and win the game. We are set for victory and we are committed to ensuring that our Governor is returned as Governor in 2019 to consolidate on his achievements and vision. We are going to make sure democracy is deepened in the state,” Barrister Sampson emphasized. The Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Sir Monday Uko, further informed about the forthcoming sports festival, saying “It has been a very worthy discussion. We also spoke about the upcoming Youth Sports Festival. There will be cash prizes of N10million, N5million and N3million for 1st, 2nd and 3rd winners. I want to use this opportunity to inform the people of Akwa Ibom State that the Governor has done exceedingly well.”Also speaking, Commissioner for Transport and Petroleum Resources, Mr. Orman Esin, said he was at the meeting to also use the opportunity to inform the public on the activities of his Ministry.“I came here to enlighten my colleagues and the people of the state on what needs to be done and how we could create a synergy between the local government system and the Ministry of Transport and Petroleum Resources. I am very sure that we are going to have more collaboration like this for the success of Akwa Ibom State. Most importantly, we have geared up ourselves to make sure Governor Udom Emmanuel returns in 2019. We are going to showcase his numerous strides to the people,” he added.Speaking on behalf of Local Government Chairmen, the State Chairman of Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) and Chairman of Eket Local Government Council, Mr. Frank Archibong, said “it was a tripartite meeting that covered a wide range of issues but chief among what we discussed was the CVR exercise, which I believe should not be viewed as a PDP matter but an Akwa Ibom matter.”Explaining further, he said “Our concern should be how to increase our stakes in the voters’ registration exercise; how do we increase the voting strength of Akwa Ibom State? We can only do that by mobilizing our people beyond and across party lines because this could be the basis for National Planning and revenue allocation in time to come. So there is a charge from our discussion that we should all go back and mobilize our people to get registered and have the opportunity to also exercise their franchise.”In another development, the Special Adviser also met with PDP Defenders, an initiative of PDP Chairmanship and Councillorship aspirants in the 2017 Local Government Polls, who hold the key to easy sensitization and mobilization of members of the public to participate in the ongoing CVR.Addressing members of the group, he said “Meeting with the Defenders has always been a thing of joy to me because the future belongs to the Defenders and I say this with every sense of responsibility. The group symbolizes patriotism, loyalty, good faith, courage, vision and the future. Here is a group that is a creation of circumstance, yet you have molded your circumstance into a mechanism for victory so much that the Governor, at critical fora in the state, has openly expressed his interest in the PDP Defenders.”Barrister, who said the group was fast becoming an institution, thanked members of the group for their commitment to the success of Governor Udom Emmanuel. In his words: “I thank you for your commitment to the success of Governor Udom Emmanuel. You are co-believers in the philosophy that the Governor has articulated in Akwa Ibom State; the philosophy of good governance, power sharing and investment. What Governor Udom Emmanuel has done in Akwa Ibom is to show very deep commitment to investing in the future of Akwa Ibom people and a Governor who invests so passionately in the future of his people clearly has a roadmap for the future and that is why there is a very strong current of opinion that Governor Udom Emmanuel deserves reelection, so that he can fully implement the very expansive roadmap that he has for Akwa Ibom State and PDP Defenders are the drivers of this reelection current.”He also acknowledged the “interest and support that the State Chairman of PDP, Obong Paul Ekpo, has in the PDP Defenders,” and added that “PDP is unstoppable in Akwa Ibom.”As at the last count, over 200 mainstream groups have endorsed Governor Udom Emmanuel for second term and when over 200 mainstream groups have endorsed a Governor for second term, who can stop him, what can stop him? So, Governor Udom Emmanuel is unstoppable towards reelection given the strong current of opinion that has risen in his support.”The Governor’s Special Adviser further commended the innovative stance of the group in giving women their pride of place through its Women Wing, saying “It is very salutary because women form a strong support plank of Governor Udom Emmanuel.”Speaking earlier, the Coordinator of the group, Mr. Cyril Umoren, said ” we are at the Bureau as people who are appreciative of your effort and to inform you that PDP Defenders are firmly rooted in all the 329 Wards of Akwa Ibom State.”He said it was their resolve to turn their seeming failure to assets for the success of the Governor in 2019.Mr. Umoren also informed the Special Adviser to the Governor of the group’s intention to officially put up an endorsement rally for the Governor.“We want to officially put up a rally to endorse the Governor for 2019. We will not just endorse but we will be in the field to ensure our endorsement comes to reality by voting. We must defend the party at all cost because for us, PDP is Akwa Ibom and Akwa Ibom is PDP.”He also presented Mrs. Esther Bassey, a former Chairmanship aspirant from Nsit Atai, as the Woman Leader of the group. Also present at the event was the Special Adviser to the Governor on Interparty Affairs, Mr. Lawrence Udoide.
